Valentine Hollingsworth

In the midst of celebrating America 250, we want to learn about some of the people who helped shape Delaware. One important colonial figure was Valentine Hollingsworth. He was a pioneer, landowner, and community leader whose legacy can still be found throughout Delaware today.

Hollingsworth was born in England in 1632, and eventually settled in the Delaware Valley during the late 1600s. Those early settlers helped establish communities in what would eventually become Delaware and Pennsylvania. As a successful landowner and businessman, he played an important role in the growth and development of the entire region.

Valentine Hollingsworth is best known for his association with the Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as Quakers. His Christian faith influenced many aspects of his life. His commitment to peace, fairness, and community service among those tenants. These values were important to many settlers seeking a better life in the New World.

Hollingsworth acquired large tracts of land near the Brandywine Creek and helped create opportunities for future generations. Surprisingly, many local families can still trace their ancestry back to him! His descendants went on to contribute to business and agriculture.
