America 250 celebrations encourage us to look back at our nation's start. It is fascinating to explore how colonial settlers across the Eastern Shore of Maryland practiced their faith. For many colonists, Christian worship was one of the most important parts of daily life.

During the colonial era, Eastern Shore communities were often spread far apart. Across large farms, untamed rivers, and isolated settlements. Because neighbors lived so many miles apart from one another, attending church would require a long trip by foot or horseback. Some were fortunate to have a wagon. And even some faithful went to church by boat! Despite those challenges, many colonists made worship a priority.

Sunday was typically the peak of the week’s religious activities. Families gathered at the local church to hear a sermon, pray together, and sing hymns. They listened to Scripture readings too - just like we do today. For much of that colonial period, the Church of England was the established church in Maryland at the time. Other Christian groups - like the Quakers, Methodists, Presbyterians, and Baptists - were gradually gaining influence around the region.Their worship was about more than just attending church services. Families also practiced faith together at home. Parents would read from the Bible and lead the family in prayer. They taught the children important Christian values. Those daily routines helped keep faith at the center of family life.

Religious communities helped to shape the culture and values of Maryland’s Eastern Shore by encouraging charity, responsibility, and service.

Today, many historic churches still stand across the Eastern Shore. They offer a connection to our shared colonial past. As you celebrate America’s 250th birthday, take a moment to remember how early settlers worshiped. That reflection will help you better understand the role faith played in building local communities that worked together to shape America!
