Delaware Politics during the Civil War

The American History Series continues with a program titled Delaware Politics During the Civil War. Presented by Michael McKain, this program will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, 1:00 p.m. at the Milford Public Library in Milford, Delaware. The presentation will explore the story of Delaware’s political climate on the eve of and during the American Civil War. Delaware, though a border state, had a uniquely divided political situation with a dwindling number of enslaved people, competing loyalties to the Union, state sovereignty, and a fading slave system. Drawing on primary sources such as newspapers, diaries, and speeches, this presentation will explore the complex and fascinating world of Delaware’s politics during the Civil War Era.

Michael McKain was born in Milford, Delaware. He earned his bachelor’s in history education and political science as well as a Masters of Instruction from the University of Delaware and a Master of Arts in American History from Gettysburg College. After teaching middle and high school for ten years, he now serves as Social Science Department Chair and Collegewide Coordinator for K-12 Partnerships at Delaware Technical Community College in Georgetown. He resides in Milford with his wife and two teenage children.
