Welcome to the Lent - A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion!

Lent is a special time to draw near to God. The Bridge invites you to a daily devotion during March and early April. Every day, you’ll find a new Bible verse paired with a thoughtful devotion designed to inspire and uplift your spirit.

Take this time to enjoy a closer walk with God. The next 40 days of prayer, fasting, reflection, repentance, and giving will stretch you. But they will also be very rewarding. Each devotion will encourage you to examine how you incorporate prayer, fasting, reflection, repentance, and giving into your life.

This is a great time to take a closer walk with God. Come back each day, and we will enjoy this walk together!

Over the next month, you will be led through scripture and devotionals, which will help you draw closer to God.

Read a short devotion and a selected Bible verse each day. Take time to reflect and pray.

Let’s get started with Day 1!

DEVOTION

There is a lot going on In these verses that help us to understand a couple ways in praying.

Lent is a season of reflection and drawing near to God. One of the best ways we can do this is in prayer. This scripture, Matthew 6:5-6, invite us to examine our hearts—especially in how we pray. In this scripture, He contrasts two approaches to prayer: one loud and showy, the other quiet and sincere. The hypocrites, as Jesus describes them, weren’t wrong to pray—they were wrong in why/how they went about praying. Their goal was applause from others, not connection with God. Their reward was fleeting: a moment of human approval that faded as quickly as it came.

I don’t know the maturity level of the “hypocrites” as Jesus calls them, but I do know that they knew what they were doing. When I was a bit younger and less mature, I would sing in front of people to get their applause. I’d lead worship for “Jesus”, but really I was hoping someone would come up to me after church and tell me how amazing I was. I was longing for that human approval and not connection with God. So, as Jesus points out in this scripture, I was being a hypocrite, and truly…..I was.

So, what can we do? How can we make it a connection with God, and not a “Look at how Spiritual I am” prayer?

Jesus points us to something deeper. “Go into your room,” He says. “Close the door.” This isn’t just about physical space—it’s about the posture of our souls. This reminds us that God isn’t impressed by our performances. He doesn’t need our eloquence or our public displays. He longs for us—our real, unpolished selves—brought before Him in honesty and trust.

Think about your own prayer life for a moment. Is it a stage where you feel pressure to perform, even if only for yourself? Or is it a refuge, a quiet place where you meet the Father who already knows you fully? Lent is a perfect time to strip away the noise and rediscover the simplicity of talking to God as a child to a parent. Jesus promises that when we pray in secret, the Father who sees us there will reward us—not with applause, but with His presence, His peace, and His transforming love.

So, this Lent season, let’s be intentional to follow Jesus’ example. He often withdrew to places to pray (Luke 5:16). Before He went to the cross, He sought the Father in the garden, pouring out His soul in private agony (Matthew 26:39). If the Son of God needed that quiet space with the Father, how much more do we?

If you’re like me, then you probably want a practical action plan to help. Here are some ways, but I’m sure you’d be able to come up with more on your own.

1. Set Aside a Quiet Space: Find a spot in your home—a chair, a corner, even a closet—where you can pray without distraction. Make it your “room” for Lent, a place to meet God daily.

2. Simplify Your Words: For the next week, try praying without worrying about how it sounds. Speak plainly—share your fears, joys, and needs as you would with a trusted friend.
3. Fast from Public Praise: If you’re tempted to share your spiritual progress (like fasting or prayer habits) with others for affirmation, pause. Keep it between you and God instead, trusting Him to see it.
4. Start Small: Commit to 5 minutes of private prayer each day. No agenda, no script—just you and the Father. Let it grow naturally as Lent continues.

Would you pray with me?

PRAYER

Father, You see me as I am, even when no one else does. Thank You for inviting me into Your presence, not because of what I can say or do, but because of Your love. During this Lent, teach me to pray with a sincere heart. Quiet the noise around me and within me, so I can hear Your voice. Help me to trust that You’re with me in the secret places, shaping me into who You’ve called me to be. I lay my burdens, my hopes, and my silence before You now. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

You should also know that I love Jesus, my wife, coffee, my kids, coffee, and Star Wars. I also love coffee. If you had asked me 20 years ago what I would be doing as a career, I would have told you that I would be in the music industry.
It’s Day 2 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

Lent could be considered the “Christian New Years:” you decide to make changes to better yourself. During Lent, many Christians take a spiritual inventory, and give up what is harmful to our souls and concentrate on becoming more Christ-like.

About two years ago, I decided to awaken an hour earlier than usual. My goal: I would pray an entire hour, to hone my spiritual eyes to see where the Lord wished me to be and do what He wanted me to do. It started out wonderfully. I journaled, sang worship, waited for the Lord to speak to my heart. I even scheduled my phone to “ding” and inform me what action in that hour I was to embark upon.

But then…

My body decided it wanted sleep more than embark upon communion with God. I pressed the “snooze button,” and prayed sleepy prayers, and made feeble excuses. The worst excuse was, “Well, God doesn’t want our prayers to become ritualistic, right?” Unfortunately, I discontinued hourly early morning prayer. However, I’ve experienced the desire to embark upon that journey, again, because I felt the closest to God in that sweet hour of prayer than any time in my life.

We can be hard upon the disciples who fell asleep, instead of praying during Jesus’ most critical moments in the history of humanity, as He pleaded with the Father three times to “take this cup from Me.” But then I have to remember, “Lord, how many times have I fallen asleep on You?”

PRAYER

Prayer: Father, may we take this time to open our hearts to You, to seek Your face, to seek Your will above our own, and to ask You to help protect us against temptation as we draw closer to You. Amen

It’s Day 3 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

As a young mom, I longed for time alone with God. Our small apartment provided few options for quiet and solitude. I tried getting up an hour before the kids and staying up late after my family went to bed. But the kids inevitably woke up early, or my husband stayed up watching sports highlights.

In desperation, I read Scripture while in the bathtub, my only time alone. But little, chubby fingers reaching under the door and the “Mommy?” on the other side banished serenity—and spirituality.

Finally, I prayed, “Lord, help! Please show me when I can meet with you in peace.”

His answer came through Mark 1:35: “Very early in the morning…”

Meeting with God took discipline, faith, and time. But God has met me in that quiet, sacred space ever since, making it both a cherished practice and a lifeline of deep communion with Him.

Our lives are filled with chaotic, overcrowded schedules and demands. There is little time to think, pray, or spend time alone with Jesus. Yet, none of us have more pressing tasks or less time to do them than Jesus did during His ministry.

If you are struggling to find the space to meet with God, will you ask Him when He would like to meet with you? We try to fit God into our schedules, but what rewarding new rhythm might He reveal if we ask Him? God invites us to step into His holy place for deep, living communion and rest, where the rewards eclipse any cost.

PRAYER

Lord, help! Please let me know when I can meet with you in peace. Help me to fit my schedule around our time together, not my busy schedule around our time together. Amen.

It’s Day 4 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

I’ve been married almost 27 years. In that time, my husband and I have been busy with a myriad of tasks which can draw us away from each other. Even while working on common goals, we can become so focused on the task at hand, that we forget to connect with each other.

In those times, one of us needs to stop and say, “Hey, I miss you. I need to talk with you and make sure we’re still on the same page in this relationship. Come away – alone – with me.”

As the bride of Christ, it’s easy to be so concerned about our earthly spouse, our children, the bank account and the job, that we can forget to have that quiet time with the Bridegroom. Then, the noise of the day becomes a cacophony in our minds, causing anxiousness and doubt that our Lord actually cares about what is happening in our lives. But in those moments, He is calling to us and saying, “Hey, I miss you. I need to talk with you and make sure we’re still on the same page in this relationship. Come away – alone – with me.”

When I was a teenager, I’d climb out of my bedroom, onto the porch roof, to be alone with God. Then, forest trails or meandering streams became my place of refuge. As a busy mother, a warm shower felt like a huge hug as I’d cry and pour out my heart to God. Tears and water combined, flowing down the drain, along with my troubles. Your place of solitude is where you obtain some precious moments with the lover of our soul.

PRAYER

Jesus, lover of my soul, thank You for pursuing me and drawing me to Yourself for special times of solitude with You. Amen.

It’s Day 5 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

“Crockpot.”

“Crockpot?” After praying fervently for my then-wayward lamb, asking God what I could do to bring that lamb back to the fold, that’s what I heard from the Lord?

“Father,” I prayed, “I’m a little dense, here, because I have no idea what You’re talking about. Could You explain it to me?”

God knows I love to cook. So, maybe He thought I’d understand straight-away. I didn’t. “Your child is the ceramic crockpot. You, your husband, and others have provided her with all of the ingredients necessary to make her who she is. Some of those ingredients are raw. I am the cooking filament. I know how long to cook her – and how hot, or warm. Place her in My care. Cover her with the lid of prayer, thanksgiving, and faith – then allow Me to do My job and leave her be.”

“Does that mean I can’t try to talk to her, Lord?”

With gentle understanding, God said to my heart, “No, that’s not what it means. I’m telling you to not do what you usually do with your children after you give them over to Me – you take the lid of prayer off and stir things up. You’re not helping. You did what I told you to do when you raised them. Now, let Me take over.”

It was not my doing, but God’s when she gave her life back to Christ and got baptized in 2024. He is faithful to complete His work – but we trust Him at His word.

PRAYER

Thank You for the peace You bring as we – your living crockpots – learn to trust fully in You and Your promises to those who love You. If we trust the process, the outcome will be more than good, because You are good. Amen.

It’s Day 6 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

Matthew 4:2 (NIV) reveals the measure Jesus took to prepare to be tempted by the devil. "After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry." The Holy Spirit led Jesus out to the wilderness(verse 1) knowing He was about to face temptation. Knowing there was a very big test coming Jesus prepared physically and spiritually. 40 days is a LONG time to go without food! But Jesus knew this coming confrontation with the enemy would be significant and full of purpose.

It's at the very next verse that the devil showed up. Just as Jesus revealed that He was hungry the devil taunts Him to turn stones into biscuits. Isn't it just like the enemy to come at us tempting us with the very thing he thinks could make us stumble?!! Even though Jesus was hungry He resisted the devil and used the Word to combat him. In fact, as the enemy came at Him three different times, with three different temptations, Jesus spoke the Word in every situation.

When we are called to a fast, whether it is food, or tv, or social media; whatever you are letting go of or giving up, it is really important to fill that void with prayer and the Word of God. The devil WILL try to come at you. The most important weapon we have to combat the enemy's temptations is the Word! His name is Jesus. Filling up on Jesus and knowing His Word is our best defense in times like these.

It’s Day 7 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

The older I get, the more I become aware of how much my parents went through while I was just an oblivious child. Many loving parents make it their mission to hide the hardships they face from their children. Parents work hard to protect their little ones from the rigors of the world. They carry the burden and don’t let their kids feel how heavy it is. And they do it out of love.

Matthew 6:16-18 puts me in the exact same headspace. If you show love and devotion to God by fasting, don’t cheapen it by seeking affirmation from others. Verse 16 almost makes it seem like your fasting should be completely secret, just between you and God.

I get chills when I hear that phrase, "Truly, I tell you, they have received their reward in full." Because their "reward" is pity from the people, not blessings from God. If you are fasting today or in the future, choose to receive your reward from God, not your peers.

PRAYER

Lord, may my eyes be fixed on you. Let my fasting be an offering to you, focused on you, not based on those around me.

It’s Day 8 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

Isaiah was a prophet during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. In those days, kings were known as good kings or bad kings based upon their relationship with God. According to the Bible, leaders who obey the Lord in spirit and in truth provide a moral compass for the people to follow, as well as peace, prosperity and protection from the nation’s enemies.

However, a leader who does not follow God’s precepts leads to communities becoming open to evil people who want to exploit others, falling away from the faith with superstitions and false religion springing up, and heavy burdens placed upon those who live under their rule.

When we pray and fast every four years before we vote for our leaders, do we as a nation pray for heads of state who will call upon the Lord to help fight injustice, encourage the people to help feed the hungry, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, and protect the most vulnerable in our human family? Or do we not care, just as long as our paychecks are larger and our own bills at the grocery store are smaller? Moral character in leaders does make a difference for a nation and its prosperity.

I will admit, most of the time when I have fasted, it’s been ego-centric, more along the lines of “Father, help me find my purpose. Show me my identity in You. Protect I, me, and mine.” While I do pray for God’s influence to be felt and heard in the lives of our heads of government, I need to remember to fast and pray as Isaiah told us to do.

PRAYER

Father, may we become true intercessors as we fast and pray, seeking Your will for our nation, as Isaiah did for Israel. Amen.

Take this time to enjoy a closer walk with God. Read a short devotion and a selected Bible verse each day.

It’s Day 9 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

The prophet Joel, in a time of national crisis, calls out to the people of Judah, “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster. (Joel 2:12-13, ESV)

These verses paint a powerful picture of true repentance. It's not just a superficial show, a mere tearing of clothes to demonstrate outward sorrow. No, Joel calls for something much deeper: a rending of the heart. A complete turning away from sin and a turning towards God.

Fasting is presented here not as a magical ritual, but as a tangible expression of this inner transformation. When we fast, we deny ourselves something we need, something we crave. This physical act mirrors the spiritual reality of denying our sinful desires, those things that pull us away from God. It’s a way of saying, “Lord, I am serious about this. I am willing to sacrifice even my physical comfort to show you how much I desire to be close to you.”

Fasting is not about earning God's favor. The verse reminds us why we should return to Him: because He is already gracious, compassionate, slow to anger, and abounding in love. God's arms are already open wide. Our fasting and repentance are our response to His incredible mercy, a recognition of our need for His grace.

Think about it: What are the "garments" in your life that you need to rend, or tear apart? What are the superficial things you cling to that give a false sense of security or righteousness? What distractions pull you away from God? This Lenten season, lets examine our hearts, identify those areas where we need to turn back to God, and express that desire through sincere repentance and, if appropriate, the discipline of fasting. We can allow our fasting be a genuine act of humility, a tangible demonstration of our longing for God, and an acknowledgment of His boundless love and compassion.

PRAYER

Lord, we confess that too often our repentance has been superficial, more about outward appearances than inward transformation. We thank you for your immense grace and love, for the open arms you extend to us even when we stray. Help us, this Lent, to tear apart our hearts and dispose of the parts that are not for you, from those that are. Show us those areas where we need to turn back to you. If we choose to fast, let it be a genuine expression of our desire for you, a way of denying ourselves the things that separate us from your love. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

It’s Day 10 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

Fasting has long been a practice for both spiritual and physical benefits by cultures around the world. At the time, the health benefits of fasting weren’t understood. But the difficulties of the self-discipline required was. Paul’s words are about being in control. About not letting the urges of your body rule over you. Back during his time, the concept of fasting only held religious connotations. But we have the benefit of modern knowledge and it turns out the practice has a ton of very real health benefits.

Research shows that intermittent fasting can improve metabolic health, reduce inflammation, and support weight loss. improve blood sugar control, heart health, and enhanced brain function. Fasting can also boost the body's resilience by promoting a process we are just now starting to understand.’ It's called autophagy, a process where cells remove damaged components and regenerate healthier ones. This cellular renewal contributes to overall longevity and well-being. As we discipline our bodies through fasting, we not only draw closer to God but also experience profound physical rewards that can enhance our quality of life.

If you have never experienced the physical and spiritual benefits of a fast before, I encourage you to try it out. The act of fasting involves more than just not eating. Try replacing the time you would spend eating with personal growth activities. Day one is tough. Day two is easier. By day 3, fasting seems like not that big of a deal at all.

If you are healthy enough to try it out, follow Paul’s advice. But from personal experience I want to warn you that the first meal off of a longer fast needs to be small. Trust me, don’t overdue your return to eating or you can have a real bad time.

PRAYER

Lord, give me strength - to fast! Help me to resist temptation as I set my focus on you. Let the thing I decide to set aside be a sacrifice pleasing to you as well, Father. Amen.

It’s Day 11 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

In Memphis, Tennessee, brothers Alan and Eric Barnhart decided to go into business together. Before doing so, then 25-year-old Alan searched the Scriptures to give him inspiration as to how to handle the money the brothers hoped to make. What he found made him come to the conclusion that even though he wanted to be good in business, and had a competitive flair, he didn’t want to make so much money that it would ruin his life and inhibit his relationship with Jesus.

So, in 1986, the brothers agreed to cap their income to match that of middle-class residents in their hometown, while quietly donating the rest of their profits. In their first year of business alone, the brothers anonymously gave away $55,000 to charity – more than Alan’s salary.

For the first 15 years of business, they told no one about their charitable deeds. They only became vocal about their income pledge after they were challenged to help others run their businesses in like manner. After 30 years in business, they gave their 250-million-dollar crane company away in 2007 to a charitable trust. When asked about their decision, they said it was never their business, anyway; it was God’s.

PRAYER

Father, may what we do with our money, time and gifts be for Your glory above all else – not for the glory of other people. Thank You for your gifts of charity to us. Amen.

It’s Day 12 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

A friend of mine answered a phone call from someone she thought she knew. The caller ID even said the name of the company. So, when the caller explained the reason for the call stating that unless my friend could fill in the missing data her account was in jeopardy of being closed. Instead of hanging up and calling the company directly to verify, she gave her personal information to the caller and instantly she was scammed.

Sadly, scams happen every day. Identity theft. Stock market crash. Deals gone bad. Things happen that can jeopardize our financial security. When we put our trust in a financial plan, a nest egg, a retirement fund ... it all can change in a moment. It IS wise to plan for the future, but it should not be where we put our faith.

Luke 12:33-34 (MSG) tells us, “Be generous. Give to the poor. Get yourselves a bank that can’t go bankrupt, a bank in heaven far from bank robbers, safe from embezzlers, a bank you can bank on. It’s obvious, isn’t it? The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being."

God's math is even better than girl math! When He tells us to be givers...generous and mindful of those in need... we cannot outgive God. That savings account will never run out or be stolen. God is the Keeper of our accounts and the way we make deposits? Be kind and generous to those in need. Something happens to our heart when we give. It makes us long for heaven even more. For where our treasure is - that's where we long to be.

PRAYER

Lord, give me wisdom with Your provision. Please make me a wise steward of everything you place in my hands. Protect me from deception and thieves. Make it clear when someone in need is an opportunity to show Your generosity. Amen.

It’s Day 13 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

This powerful verse encapsulates the essence of Christian generosity and the blessings that flow from it.

The Bible mentions the act of giving more than 2,000 times, emphasizing its significance in our spiritual journey. God's message is clear: being generous is not just an act of kindness; it is a reflection of His love and grace. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, we see numerous examples of selfless giving. Abraham's willingness to offer his son Isaac, the widow's mite, and the early Christian community sharing their possessions are just a few illustrations of sacrificial giving that pleased God.

Generosity is at the heart of God's character. He gave His only Son, Jesus Christ, for our salvation, the ultimate act of love and giving. As followers of Christ, we are called to mirror this generosity in our lives. When we give, we participate in God's redemptive work, bringing hope and joy to others.

The act of giving is also not just a suggestion. God makes it very clear that caring for those in need is a command, not a suggestion. For those who choose to ignore the cries of those in need are cursed and will be forgotten by God when they cry out for him. These are just 2 of the warnings scripture gives to those who ignore the poor, widow, immigrant, and orphan among us.

The act of giving transforms both the giver and the recipient. It fosters a sense of community, compassion, and trust in God's provision. As we embrace the blessing of giving, we draw closer to God's heart and experience His boundless love and grace. Let us remember that every act of generosity, no matter how small, carries the potential to change lives and glorify God.

PRAYER

Dear God, work on my heart. Transform me into the generous and giving person that reflects Jesus to those around me Let my hands be open and put me in the path of those in need. Amen.

It is currently a thriving church. But starting youth groups in small towns wasn’t exactly a cost effective way to live, so it was time for a change. Dave thought he wanted to be a corporate mergers and acquisitions manager which is why he pursued a business degree; but once he realized he didn’t like cities, or corporations, or wearing suits, or shaving, or really caring about money at all, he went a different direction and moved to Lewes and got an amazing dog named Neelix instead.

It’s Day 14 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

A brief scroll through social media or television commercials offers countless opportunities to "Play this game and get paid" or "Get rich quick..." followed by a gimmick. These ads appeal to many viewers but present an upside-down view of money from the scriptures.

In these verses the Apostle Paul tells us that the content of our investments directly correlates to the blessings we receive. Shortly after we were married, my husband, Jerry said he’d like for us to add one percent to our tithe each year and see what happened. I’d been tithing ten percent, but couldn’t imagine how I could squeeze out even one percent more!

But we did.

To our delight, God met our needs as we invested more in His Kingdom.

Jerry also taught me to never leave a stingy tip. Many servers are single moms trying to provide for their kids or young people working and going to college. So even for mediocre service, we tipped generously. He helped me see our actions showed our heart attitude and gratitude.

Where might you sow more generously? Not because you must, but to express your love for God. If you haven’t already, I know increasing your giving in time, energy, and other resources will more than pay you back. And your joy will overflow.

PRAYER

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for the many ways you supply our needs. Teach us to trust you more and become more cheerful givers. Amen.

It’s Day 15 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

My then-young son and I had just completed our usual Saturday morning grocery shopping.

We returned to our car and prepared for our drive home. My son was in the backseat, buckled into his booster seat, and I was in the front driver's seat.

As we prepared to exit the shopping center, I saw yet another man holding a cardboard sign in need. For a moment, I felt compassion, but my mind ignored my heart. I just had to make it to the stop sign to get past the man, to move on, and to forget about the tug on my heart.

As we approached the stop sign, I heard my son’s little voice from the backseat of the car. It was a voice of concern and compassion, wanting to know why that man was holding a piece of cardboard with written words on it. That was the voice of a tender, untainted heart, a heart that held concern for a stranger in need of food.

That day, we made a pit stop to get food for a needy stranger, holding a cardboard sign. He was a stranger to me but not to Jesus. That day, my son helped me see a man more like Jesus would see him.

Jesus teaches us about love and what it looks like to put love into action. God wants our hearts. Our heart posture matters to Him. What is in our hearts flows out of us.

As we approach Easter and the resurrection, let us lean in and ask God to soften our hearts. May He reveal anything that needs to be made right with Him. May we see and love people a little more like Jesus.

PRAYER

Lord, please be patient as I learn the lessons Jesus taught. Remind me to put love into action whenever possible. Set the posture of my heart to be pleasing to You, Father. Amen.

It’s Day 16 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

It was September of 1992. In my arms I held my two-month-old baby boy. I started going to church during my pregnancy. However, I felt like I didn’t deserve to be there. After all, in December of 1990, I knew I had committed the unpardonable sin – and there was no way God could forgive me for what I had done, or so I thought. How could He – when I couldn’t forgive myself?

Besides, I deserved the life I had up until I gave birth to that precious baby. My then-husband and I experienced a very volatile relationship – actions rendered unto me, I thought I deserved. But on that Autumn day in 1992, I held a little baby, and talked to God for the first time in years.

“Thank You so much for my little boy. I don’t deserve him, I thank You.”

Then, for the first time, I heard His still, small voice speak to the depths of my heart.

“Do you love that little baby?”

Ashamedly, I said haughtily, “Well, yeah, I just thanked You for him, didn’t I?”

“If you thought it would save His life, would you give up your life for him?”

“In a heartbeat, yes.”

Then, with a firm voice, He said, “Then what do you think I did for you?”

For the first time, I understood: If I would have been the only person on this planet, the sacrifice He made on the cross was for me – His child that He loved endlessly. I placed my baby in his bassinet, got on my knees and said, “Please – forgive me, Father – I never knew or understood, until now.”

PRAYER

Prayer: Father, thank You for seeking us out when we were blind to Your grace and mercy. Thank You for Your amazing love and forgiveness. Amen.

It’s Day 17 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

Hey there! As we journey through Lent, let's take some time to reflect on the importance of repentance in our walk with God.

In Luke 5:31-32, Jesus shares some pretty profound words: "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

When you look at this at first, Jesus' words might seem pretty straightforward, but let's dive a bit deeper.

Jesus is not saying that some people are inherently "well" or righteous, while others are "sick" or sinful. Rather, He's emphasizing that we all need repentance, regardless of our perceived moral standing.

When you think about it – we all have areas in our lives where we've messed up, where we've fallen short of God's standards. And that's exactly why repentance is so important. It's not just a one-time event; it's an ongoing process of turning away from sin and towards God. It's recognizing our need for a Savior and surrendering our lives to Him.

It's easy to get caught up in justifying our actions or downplaying our sin. However, Jesus' words remind us that we're all in need of repentance. We're all "sick" and in need of the Great Physician.

That’s great, Chris, but what does repentance look like in our daily lives? Maybe like this:
• Recognizing our sin and taking responsibility for it with no excuses, no blame-shifting
• Turning away from sinful patterns and behaviors and it's not always easy, but it's necessary
• Seeking forgiveness and restoration through Jesus because He's the only one who can truly heal our brokenness
• Walking in obedience to God's Word and the Holy Spirit, which is a daily choice, and one that's worth making.

As we walk through Lent, let's take time to reflect on our own need for repentance. Let's ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas of our lives where we need to turn back to God. Let's be honest with ourselves and with God, acknowledging our sin and our need for forgiveness.

Reflection Questions:
• What areas of your life do you need to repent of?
• How can you take responsibility for your actions and seek forgiveness through Jesus Christ?
• What does walking in obedience to God's Word and Spirit look like in your daily life?
• How can you experience the joy of repentance and the restoration that comes through faith in Jesus Christ?

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before You, acknowledging our need for repentance. We recognize that we're all "sick" and in need of Your healing touch. Help us to turn away from sin and towards You.

Reveal to us the areas of our lives where we need to repent. Give us the courage to take responsibility for our actions and to seek forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

As we journey through Lent, may we walk in obedience to Your Word and Spirit. May we experience the joy of repentance and the restoration that comes through faith in Jesus Christ.

Help us to remember that repentance isn't just about feeling bad about our sin – it's about turning away from that sin and towards You. It's about experiencing the freedom and forgiveness that only You can offer.

In His name, we pray. Amen.

Hi! You should probably know this about me, first. I'm always 30 seconds away from crying. Just a heads up. You should also know that I love Jesus, my wife, coffee, my kids, coffee, and Star Wars. I also love coffee. If you had asked me 20 years ago what I would be doing as a career, I would have told you that I would be in the music industry. However, I would have been the one on the radio singing the songs, not the one playing them. But....God had a bigger and better story.

It’s Day 18 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

For millennia, spiritual seekers have gone to great lengths to get close to God. Whether it is making great pilgrimages to holy sites or spending long stretches in deserts or wilderness solitude, many are willing to suffer to sense God’s nearness.

The people in Peter’s day were willing to follow all sorts of complex and rigorous laws to try to get close to God. However, God revealed a more immediate route to intimacy with Him: repentance. When God sent His Son, Jesus, it challenged their expectations of how they thought He should work. As a result, their pride, reliance on their religious practices, and unbelief blinded them to the person and presence of their Messiah ministering in their midst.

Thankfully, God doesn’t require lengthy pilgrimages for us to experience intimacy with Him. He calls us to repent of our unbelief and pride so faith can open our eyes to see Jesus working in our midst. There is nothing easy about repentance, but God makes it accessible to all of us. In this season of Lent, let’s draw closer to God through the grace of repentance.

PRAYER

Father, break my heart for what breaks yours. There are areas in my life that I must repent before intimacy with you can grow. But I want that close walk with you, Lord. Amen.

It’s Day 19 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

About a hundred years ago, the country known as the Soviet Union was on a mission: eradicate God from the people’s conscious, and replace it with utter devotion to Lenin and the communist way of life. One of the fronts of attack was through the performing arts. “Christ in a Tailcoat” was to be performed on Easter evening in Moscow, complete with much fanfare leading up to the night of the performance.

Leading up to the first act, a radio blared with a lecture regarding the “vile role of Christianity in the history of the peoples.” Participants dressed in choir robes sang against Christianity, while the audience laughed. An altar of wine bottles formed into a cross greeted those in attendance.

The star of the show, Alexander Rostovtsev – portraying Jesus – was supposed to read from the Bible, “Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.” He was then going to throw down the Bible grab the props next to him and say, “Give me the tailcoat and top hat!”

But something happened to Rostovtsev as he read the Bible. He stopped, visibly trembled, then continued to read the complete chapter to the now silent audience. Then, he made the sign of the cross and said, “Lord – remember me when thou comest into Thy kingdom!” He was not able to say more, for the curtain abruptly came down. The show was canceled at that moment. At least one sinner’s heart was changed that day.

PRAYER

Father, when we find ourselves in a place of enmity with You, please bring us back to a place of repentance and humility before Your feet. Amen.

It’s Day 20 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

We had a rule in our house while our children were younger: if you do something wrong—such as eating the top crust off of freshly baked brownies—but willingly come to us with a contrite heart and confess, we won’t punish you severely.

How I wish that brownie-top-eating child had come to me. I warned the children that if no one fessed up, I would throw away the entire batch of brownies. Later, one of my friends said that my husband and I should have eaten the whole batch of brownies in front of the children by ourselves instead of following through with my threat.

We eventually remembered we had a security camera pointed in the direction of the kitchen, and discovered who committed the wrongdoing. Because lying was added to his charge of thievery, a stronger punishment ensued. Don’t worry – I made that child’s favorite cookies the next night, and allowed him only one cookie, and shared the rest with the children who were innocent regarding the brownie fiasco.

How does God deal with His children when we sin? Sin has consequencess. There are times when we hide our wrongdoings from Him. He might not have a security camera to watch our misdeeds playing out, but He knows. And then we wonder why others are reaping benefits from their honest relationship with God, while we reap the bitter harvest of our actions. The only way to get back on track with God is to confess our sins and ask for forgiveness. And no matter what we’ve done, He is faithful and will forgive us of all unrighteousness.

PRAYER

Thank You for being a good Father who wants us to come to You with everything – including our sins. And thank You for Your forgiveness. Amen.

It’s Day 21 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

As long as I can remember, traveling to Israel was a huge dream of mine. So, when my husband and I actually won an all-expenses paid trip to the Holy Land, you would have thought I would be overjoyed, right? Of course!

And then the anxiousness set in.

I was diagnosed with PTSD after I found a parishioner – someone I considered a friend – had tragically taken his own life. I tried to revive him, but failed. In that moment, it felt as though agents of hell invaded my mind and ransacked it, to the point I could not pick up the pieces.

A myriad of other events then occurred that also shook my faith. The questions in my mind almost paralyzed me regarding the trip. Who would watch my children? What if something happened to them while I was away? What if the plane crashed, leaving our children orphans?

I told my mentor, who was dying of pancreatic cancer, my fears. I was already crying out to God, but my heart was unsettled. Michael replied, “You keep asking me what you can do to help me. Here’s what you can do: go. Go to Israel. Then, come back and tell me how Papa God did something amazing.”

Amazing, indeed. While there, God bestowed upon me many revelations. It was a turning point in my life, one that helped me realize that through it all, God held me in the palm of His hands. And, He would continue to do so, all of the days of my life.

PRAYER

Prayer: Father God, when anxiousness seems like a heavy shroud that suffocates me and keeps me from basking in Your presence, please rip the heavy veil apart and allow me to walk in the freedom and light of Your love. Amen.

It’s Day 22 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

In the early 1900’s, a phrase became popular among Christians following the release of a novel in 1896 by Charles Sheldon entitled, “In His Steps: What Would Jesus Do?” A little over 100 years following the publication of the novel, the phrase made a resurgence amongst Christians with the release of the hit song, “What Would Jesus Do?” in 1998 by Christian rock band Big Tent Revival.

That song sparked something within me. How could I live my life more intentionally for Christ? If Jesus wouldn’t watch a certain type of movie, should I? If Jesus loved the homeless and downtrodden, shouldn’t I? If someone cut Jesus off in traffic, would He cuss them out, or would He extend grace? If something didn’t sit right in my spirit, I started to question my motives. Was my emotion in a given situation Christ-like? If not, how could I change to be more like Jesus?

I wish I could say everything I said or did from that point onward was run through the “Christ-like litmus test” before I said or did anything. Unfortunately, that is not the case. However, we serve a God that, when we realize we have fallen short of the mark, He is faithful to forgive us. So, what would Jesus do? Considering He gave His life for us as an atonement for our sins, it can only be fair to give our lives for the One who gave us life-everlasting.

PRAYER

Prayer: Jesus, You gave Your all to assure that we could enjoy the splendor of Heaven. Help us to live a life that honors Your sacrifice. Amen.

It’s Day 23 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

For years, I served the Lord with intentional dependence on His Spirit to fuel whatever work He called me to do. No late night prep so I would feel ready to teach the following day, no marathon study sessions to ensure I was ready to lead a ministry effort or present a message. And my heavenly Father never failed to provide exactly what I needed.

However, following a long season of illness and struggle, I leaned increasingly on outside help to feel more confident about my work. This extra support for my ministry efforts meant I missed the intimacy with God I had treasured. Where once I relied on and rested in the Lord for powerful service, now my work felt propped up, lacking the force and the fruit of my earlier dependence on Him.

The people in Jeremiah’s day had drifted far away from dependence upon God. Their self-reliance led them to abandon their relationship with Him. Had they forgotten their love for God and their identity as God’s chosen people? Had they forgotten His faithfulness to them? Now, after leaning on everything but God, they staggered under the weight of sin’s consequences and the discipline it had brought upon them. But amid their struggle, God called to them, offering restoration and rest through repentance.

God calls to us to examine our lives and consider our steps. Are they taking us away from God in self-reliance, or are they leading us to deeper dependence upon Him? No matter where we find ourselves today, God extends the invitation to return to Him and find rest.

PRAYER

Please take a look at my life. Then, reveal to me the areas you want to eliminate, refine, or change. You're the author and perfector. Let me be a willing character in the story you are telling with my life. Amen.

It’s Day 24 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

After years of walking with the Lord, I was no stranger to trials. However, after losing multiple family members, I struggled to understand God’s heart and to trust His sovereignty. The path grew even darker when a series of family crises rolled in, one hard upon the heels of the last. I tried not to worry about the future or about losing more loved ones but could not turn the fear spigot completely off.

Faithful Christianity does not shield us from the pain of loss and hardship; quite the opposite. Jesus told us that in this world we will have trouble. Not may—will. What happens when life’s circumstances challenge our faith?

We pray for our suffering to be removed and for our circumstances to change. But that is not the path our Savior walked. Jesus saw His life and circumstances through the lens of a mind renewed with Scripture. For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross and faithfully finished the work God gave Him to do.

Without a renewed mind, the suffering of this world can shatter our faith. We don't need to change our challenges nearly as much as we need to change our perspective on them. When we face trials through the lens of a renewed mind, we too will finish the work God has given us to do.

PRAYER

Father, even as I pray for my suffering to be removed... I know it may linger. But I trust you to guide, encourage, and even carry me through it. Renew my mind so I can withstand the struggles ahead. Amen.

It’s Day 25 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

When I was a teenager, while I loved God, the thought of eternity was unfathomable to me. How does one measure the concept of “forever worshipping God?” My octogenarian grandmother had a more concrete view of things. “The more you know Him, the less you worry about all of this,” Gram said, her hand making a sweeping motion around the room.

It seemed easy to concentrate on God and all things eternal with one child. And then, I got remarried. And then, we had three more children. Sometimes your own walk can take an unexpected detour when your heart’s desire is to try to make sure everyone else is physically and spiritually intact.

I became concerned whether I was “doing it right” regarding the raising of our children. I knew I was far from perfect, and so I was afraid I’d “mess up” my young brood. A verse in Psalms 69:6 became my prayer: “Let not those who wait for You, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed because of me; Let not those who seek You be confounded because of me, O God of Israel.”

Now, our children are grown. And as I look back upon our lives together, I see where God’s hand was so present. He took care of us through so many trials. The biggest triumphs were when I didn’t worry, but turned it all over to Him. And even though I want to remain here on earth as long as the Lord allows, I also look forward to the day when He says to me, “You’ve completed the tasks I’ve assigned to you. Come, spend eternity with Me.”

PRAYER

Prayer: Jesus, eternity is just a heartbeat away. Help us to keep our focus upon You, and know that Heaven is our true home – not here. Amen.

It’s Day 26 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

While most people equate “giving” with a monetary contribution, it can also mean something else. For example, giving someone a boost of confidence and compassion.

There is a story of a young boy who was both shunned and ridiculed by his small town. His only crime was being born out of wedlock. He hid most of the time, staying home, fearing school, and sitting in the back pew of church trying to remain unseen until he could duck out before the service ended.

One Sunday, enjoying the service too much, perhaps, he lingered too long and got caught in the throng of the exiting congregation. At the door the pastor stopped him and asked, “Who are you, son? Whose boy are you?”

The crushing weight of embarrassment and frustration was about to settle in when the preacher continued with a smile, “Wait a minute…I know who you are…I see the family resemblance. You are a son of God!”

It was that one simple message that changed the path of an entire life. That, added to the preacher’s final declaration, “Boy, you’ve got a great inheritance. Go and claim it.” That child was Ben Hooper, who went on to be the Governor of Tennessee.

You just never know how powerful your words of encouragement can be when you give them with God’s love.

Be what God has in mind for you.

Never miss an opportunity to give to someone else!

PRAYER

Lord, please help me to remember that I can be generous in my giving, not only through monetary donations, but through the building up of others whose lives may be changed by my actions. Thank you for all the blessings in my life. Help me to bless others daily.
Amen.

It’s Day 27 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

I was a single mother who lived in a small apartment when I started attending the new church in our town with my then-toddler. I didn’t have a lot of money, but I made enough to pay my rent, give a tithe and offering and give a little bit to various ministries.

I was excited when the young pastor at the new church announced our small congregation collect food for the poor. While shopping, I’d buy an extra favorite food item. Because I firmly believed that we should not let our left hand know what our right hand was doing, I’d sneak the food items into the box they’d set up.

At the end of the time period for collecting the food, the pastor and his wife brought the box and encouraged us to pray for the one who would receive it. And then he looked directly at me, and in front of everyone said, “Well, since you’re the poorest member of our church – being a single mother and all – my wife and I decided to give you this box.”

Now, there have been other times in my life when I have needed the helping hand of the church – like the time my husband almost died in a major vehicular accident. I greatly appreciated and treasured the help we received, then. But, as person newly back to the faith, I was embarrassed that day. I later realized that while it gave me a sense of accomplishment to give to others, receiving from others was difficult; I eventually asked God to deal with my pride.

PRAYER

Prayer: Lord, as we help those who need a helping hand, may we remember to stay humble. And in those moments when we need a helping hand, may we set aside our pride. Amen.

It’s Day 28 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

Did you ever think about how generous you can be with your attitude?

The right attitude, that is!

How is your attitude these days?

Have you had an attitude checkup lately?

Never forget that with the right attitude you can handle any challenge that comes your way!

Some years ago, I was writing a book for Adams Media Publishing.

A few weeks after I finished writing The Streetwise Guide to Business Management, I received an email from the editor. And while the feedback was positive, there were about a dozen suggestions on how to improve a few sections here and there.

At first, I was outraged: what was the editor thinking?

Who does he think he is, trying to tell me how to make the book better?

Did he forget who the creative writer is…and that my words are special?

After a few minutes of wallowing in self-pity, I realized that the editor was only trying to make my book a better one. Then it hit me: behind every successful author is an editor (or two) who sees the “big picture.”

Once I changed my attitude about editors and why they want changes, my whole outlook on all my book projects was different. I went from a “can’t please this editor” attitude to “I can’t wait to work with the editor on this project.”

It was as different as night and day.

And it worked!

So, if your attitude needs a little adjustment my friend, take care of it NOW!

PRAYER

Lord, you are always generous with your attitude towards me. I thank you for all the blessings in my life. Please help me remember to have a giving attitude, no matter what challenges come my way. Amen.

It’s Day 29 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

In 1992, a book written by Gary Chapman gained much popularity. “The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts” delved into how we as humans express and receive love. In the book, it also said that a person could have more than one “love language,” which included: acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, words of affirmation, and physical touch.

While embarking on ministry opportunities, it’s been a habit of mine to utilize the love languages to give to others. When I encounter a person in mourning, I will hug that person – or just sit there and hold their hand. Some ministries need monetary gifts. Tending to the nursery, providing meals, teaching children, making sure the words are on the screen during worship – those are just a few acts of service within the church.

Staying overnight in a church building with the homeless, answering phones after-hours at the local pregnancy, being part of a prison ministry, or doing repairs at an elderly person’s home are ways to be the hands and feet of Jesus outside of the four walls of a church. Sometimes, complimenting a stranger in the store are ways to give words of affirmation.

Whatever you do unto the Lord for another human being, from a comforting smile to the young mother burdened by a crying child – to serving a meal to the downtrodden – you are doing more for the kingdom of God than you could ever hope to imagine. So, be the love, the hands, the feet of Jesus, wherever you go. You may be the only Jesus a person may ever experience. Make it a good one.

PRAYER

Prayer: Lord, where ever I go, whatever I do, help me to extend grace, love and mercy as Your representative. Amen.

It’s Day 30 of the Lent, A Closer Walk with God 40-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

The word “giving” means different things to different people.

A mother may say, “I give my love to my children.”

A husband may say, “I give my love to my wife.”

The person next to you in church might say “I give my tithes to the church.”

But giving can also be an act of worship.

In the Scriptures, the idea of giving to God is a profound expression of your faith, gratitude and obedience to Him.

When we give, it should be generous and sacrificial. Not because God needs anything, but because we want to show our love for Him.

God seeks out and acknowledges those who worship him. His love is timeless and never-ending.

Make sure your heart is filled with joy so that when you give as an act of worship, you will be ready to receive all of God’s blessings that are intended for you.

PRAYER

Lord, I give you praise and thanks for who you are, and for all that you do for me. Please help me to give with joy in my heart and to be a blessing to others. Amen.
