Now Playing Starry Night Chris August

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.  (Matthew 14:30-32) ESV.

It is challenging to ask for help. We tend to be wired to go at things alone for the most part. I think about that old joke about men never wanting to ask for directions; most men would rather drive around in circles than admit they are lost and don’t know where they are going. I claim it!

In many ways, we feel responsible for being the “man” to take responsibility. On the one hand, this is admirable, as we are meant to be accountable and dependable. We believe that one of our God-given responsibilities is to look after our families and be the leader of the people God has entrusted to us, which is true. However, we cannot do this alone; we must commit our responsibilities to God and allow Him to lead us, then teach others.

Peter had an adventurous spirit. He quickly got out of the boat to walk to Jesus on the water. You can imagine that he must have been feeling quite good for a few minutes as he walked on water – I mean, how many people have done that, right? When reality set in, Peter began to sink. At that moment, Peter had a choice. He could make the most of it; he surely knew how to swim as a fisherman. His other option was to admit he was in trouble and ask for help.

Peter chose to ask for help, and the moment he did, Jesus was there to rescue him. Notice Peter’s words in (v. 30), “ But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Peter didn’t try and tough it out – he admitted that he was in trouble and needed saving.

Friends, likewise for us, if we are in trouble today, feeling like we are sinking with every step, don’t try to tough it out – ask for help as Peter did. Say, “Lord, save me!” The Bible says, “Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him.” Jesus will do the same for you too. Would you please join in saying this prayer?

Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You and ask You to help me. I have tried for too long to tough things out on my own. I need Your help, Lord. As You did for Peter, please reach out Your Hand to me today and save me from my troubled waters. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
