Every day, you’ll find a new Bible verse paired with a thoughtful devotion designed to inspire and uplift your spirit.

In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to overlook the blessings that surround us, but new research says that Gratitude and anxiety can NOT exist in your brain at the same time. So, this month, let’s pause and reflect together on the importance of giving thanks. Each devotion will encourage you to cultivate a grateful heart and recognize God’s goodness in your life.

Don’t miss out on this special opportunity to deepen your faith and embrace gratitude! Come back daily, and let’s celebrate the joy of giving thanks together!

Over the next month, you will be led through scripture and devotionals, which will help you practice gratitude.

Take time to be thankful. Read a short devotion and a selected Bible verse each day.

Let’s get started with Day 1!

DEVOTION

I sat on the couch next to Brad, staring at a mountain of unopened cards piled into a basket on the coffee table. “I haven’t had the heart to open them,” he said without looking at me. His wife of 16 years had passed away less than a week before after a long bout with cancer. I put my arm around him, and we stared at the multi-colored stationary in silence as the minutes ticked by. The creaking above us broke the stillness as we heard his 9-year-old son Jason head for a post-midnight bathroom run.

It took nearly two hours to get through the stack. It didn’t take that long to read them; it took that long to analyze them. Brad told me I had one job. Somehow, make this heart-breaking task fun. Or at least not so painful. Despite the fresh loss, we laughed at all but four as we read them to each other in hushed tones. We, as humans, are not prepared to process deep loss. We don’t even fully have the language to talk about it. This became abundantly clear as we finished the last of what turned out to be 46 cards.

Most people are exactly as clueless as I am when it comes to figuring out what to say to a friend or acquaintance who just lost someone close to them. Brad and I are very analytical people, and we couldn’t help but turn this horrible 1 AM reading session into a statistics tracking exercise.

Here are just a few of the items we wrote down.
38 “Thoughts and prayers”
31 containing 5 or fewer personally written words (not counting signatures).
4 personal memories about time with Danielle

Those four cards brought laughter and tears. They brought the recounting of stories and full conversations about who we lost. Brad was grateful for those four cards. Grateful that her memories were alive and well in friends and family. Well, four of them, anyway.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

We are not often given the gift of being completely and utterly sure of God’s will for us in our lives. Pay special attention to the “all” in this verse. Giving thanks isn’t a suggestion and doesn’t have situational exceptions. "All" includes 2 AM as you finally head to bed feeling drained, alone, and lost.

As we approach a holiday named after being thankful, I want to encourage you not to be stingy with your memories. Share the stories of the people that have impacted your life. If they are sitting around your table, then all the better. But if they aren’t, please don’t also shy away from those memories. Let us all give thanks for the time we are allowed to spend together. No matter how short or long that time may be.

VERSE

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (ESV: English Standard Version)

Don't have your Bible handy? Click here to read online.

AUTHOR

Dave Hubbard

Dave Hubbard grew up all over the world. His grandparents lived in Bethany Beach and that made the Delmarva Peninsula the closest thing to a home he had ever known.

After graduating from Philadelphia Biblical University with a BS in Biblical Theology and a BA in Business Administration, Dave moved up to the mountains of Pennsylvania with some college friends and started a youth group which grew and grew. It is currently a thriving church. But starting youth groups in small towns wasn’t exactly a cost effective way to live, so it was time for a change. Dave thought he wanted to be a corporate mergers and acquisitions manager which is why he pursued a business degree; but once he realized he didn’t like cities, or corporations, or wearing suits, or shaving, or really caring about money at all, he went a different direction and moved to Lewes and got an amazing dog named Neelix instead.

The day my brother died - it changed me forever. I believed it was the worst period of my life until my mother, my first best friend, died eight weeks later. I didn’t know how I would recover from my sorrow, loss, and the hardships that ensued afterward. Finding reasons to be thankful during that time was tough, but I did. Eventually.

What about you?

Can you reflect on when you faced adversity or an insurmountable challenge? Maybe you’re in a battle right now. Perhaps it’s an illness, job loss, or a broken relationship. During these experiences, it’s hard to find reasons to be thankful.

Looking back, we often see how God used hard seasons to bring unexpected blessings or personal growth. Maybe it strengthened our faith, deepened our empathy for others, or led us to new opportunities.

We can reinterpret our struggles through gratitude as part of God’s redemptive plan. Here are four practical ways I lived through challenging times to do this:

1: Recognize God’s Goodness
By acknowledging God’s goodness in all things, we can cultivate a spirit of gratitude transcending circumstances.

2: Embrace a Thankful Heart
We’re encouraged to accept everything with thanksgiving, which challenges us to embrace gratitude even during difficulty.

3: Be Consecrated through God’s Word and Prayer
Through the power of God’s word and prayer, we can find meaning and purpose in every experience. This consecration process allows us to see beyond the surface and recognize God’s hand in our lives.

4: Find Hope in Transformation
God can transform even the most difficult circumstances. Just as a seed buried in the darkness of the soil eventually sprouts into new life, our trials can be the fertile ground for God’s transformative work.

As we meditate on 1 Timothy 4:4-5, we can cultivate a spirit of gratitude transcending circumstances. By recognizing God’s goodness and embracing thankfulness, we can find hope in the transformative power of God. We can allow gratitude to shape our perspective and enable us to see God’s redemptive hand even in life’s challenging times.

VERSE

1 Timothy 4:4-5 (ESV: English Standard Version)

Don't have your Bible handy? Click here to read online.

AUTHOR

Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes

Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes is an editor, author, speaker, podcaster, and educational consultant. I admit I sometimes forget to thank Him for the ordinariness of life.

Colossians 4:2 instructs us to “devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” (NIV).

As a creative, I’m always watching the world. Perhaps an action will trigger an event in my next novel. Maybe a sight will induce different colors in my next painting. These same abilities of observance lend themselves to gratitude for what I observe.

We can choose to thank Him for everything He has placed in our lives as we seek out the “small wins” of the day.

What about what He protects you from? Your watchfulness in prayer can establish God’s rule in your life, keeping you from harmful situations.

Do you think you don’t have anything to be thankful for? Start where you’re at. List five tangible things you can see, feel, or hear. Are they unpleasant? Praise God for your ability to see, feel, or hear them! Do you think they’re small in the scheme of things? Praise God you see His candle flickering in the darkness. You’re reading this devotion—praise God you are alert enough to comprehend He wants to bless you!

A small notebook is a perfect place to track God’s blessings. If the sun shines 1,000 days in a row, you should have 1,000 blessings to write about! Developing the habit of observing His blessings will increase the blessings you observe.

When you pay attention to the world outside yourself, your watchfulness will guide and protect you. And for that, you can be eternally thankful.

Lord, thank you for being my tour guide in this life. Thank you for causing me to stop and pay attention to the world around me, so that I may see your glory and share it with others. God, may I always be aware of Your Goodness in my life. I escaped my ex-husband about a year prior and received less than 40 dollars a month in child support. I motioned to my son and continued. "That means my son is Your son – and You will take care of his needs according to Your riches in glory. I don’t know how You’ll do it, but I know You’ll show me the way."

I felt an urging in my heart: "Bundle up your boy, place him in his bicycle seat, and check your postbox."

"But Lord," I replied, "I checked my postbox ten minutes ago."

That strong urging came upon me once more. I knew what I had to do. I had to trust God despite what I thought I knew.

So, I bundled up my child, placed him in the child seat of my only mode of transportation, and headed to the mailbox. I hoped with anticipation for something – anything – while I turned the key, which opened what should have been an empty mailbox.

Inside, against the metal box wall, my hand felt the crisp postcard. My hand trembled as I read the words: redeemable, the brand of diapers my son used! And to top it off, it was a mega-pack! God didn’t stop at providing a normal-sized pack of diapers for my child; He mega-provided for us!

As it says in Philippians 4:6: "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God..."

You can rest in the knowledge that God hears. He cares. That’s how it was for David in Psalm 13. Known to be "a man after God’s own heart," David faced times of despair, longing, and frustration. He had periods in which he felt God may have forgotten him.

I understand. I’ve had times like that, too. Everyone around me seems to be abounding in God’s blessing, and all I see in my own life are questions and brokenness.

I’m grateful God included David’s heart cries and questions in Scripture. They comfort me and remind me I am not alone. God’s love is faithful and worthy of our trust. As he later reassured others when frightening events occurred, Rogers stated, "My mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'"

Recently, the southeast was battered by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. In the aftermath, stories of God’s goodness and supply have been declared as church groups, faith organizations, and Christian-owned businesses have risen to the challenge to help those devastated by the deluge. Among the many churches that have organized relief drives, a local trucking business organized a supply drive with plans to send a single truck to help.

God's people showed up when the call was made to donate items. The trucking business has taken well over ten trips to a church in North Carolina, filled with various items – from water and non-perishables to medical supplies, animal feed for farm animals, and portable heaters. Whatever the need, God is using His people to help those who have called upon His name.

In the midst of troubles, God will send His people to help. Will we answer the call?

As we obey His voice, it will help others say, "Oh, give thanks to the Lord! For His mercy endures forever," – found in Psalm 106, verse one, my mind can flow easily to praise and worship songs. It makes sense, since this verse is found in earliest hymnal! One of my favorite worship songs of all time is "The Goodness of God."

In the song, it tells how God’s mercy never fails. From the moment we are awake, until we lay our heads down upon our pillows, we can sing about the goodness of God. The worship tune speaks about how, through every fire or darkest night, we can be led by the One who is as close to us as a whisper. It comforts us to know that we can call God our father who watches over us through every moment of our life, as well a friend who will never leave us nor forsake us.

That’s the thing about recognizing the goodness of God throughout your entire life. Let’s be honest – as humans, we can experience dark circumstances. Some occurrences happen because of circumstances out of our control; other times we are the creator of the chaos that can wreak havoc in our lives. In spite of all of this, we have a God whose goodness and mercy follows us all of our days, calling us back to His embrace.

We can look at ourselves as a song God has crafted. He uses different elements such as lyrics, melody, harmony, momentum, with verses, chorus, a bridge, built around a solid structure, to make us different, yet a showmanship of His amazing creation. What a masterpiece you are! What a good God we have the pleasure to call our father, our friend!

VERSE

Psalm 106:1 (ESV: English Standard Version)

Don't have your Bible handy? Click here to read online.

AUTHOR

Rebecca Jones

Rebecca Jones is a writer and cake decorating enthusiast who lives in Seaford, Delaware with her husband Tim, and her youngest son -- a musically gifted young man named Samuel. Do you love when it’s convenient? Joyous? Fulfilling? How about when the season is terrible? Troublesome? Traumatic?

In Psalm 86:12, King David says, “I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name for ever.” (NRSV)

David was a blessed man. A leader. Someone who made others go, “This is a man for God.” He also had his share of troubles. Still, people knew. “This is a man for God.”

Why? Because David was all in. No matter his circumstances, he knew it was best to praise the Lord.

God wants the best for us. Sometimes it doesn’t seem like He’s paying attention, because if He was, some of these things wouldn’t be happening, right? These hurts run deep, and some leave scars that don’t fully heal.

But our scars can tell our story of overcoming. They can represent His Power and Protection. They can be a sign of what wasn’t worse. They can be our witness to others of what God has done for us, and what He hasn’t done. They can … if we let them. They are reminders to ourselves that God finds us important enough to call us His own, no matter what.

One of my favorite prayers is, “Lord, thank You for what You have done, what You will do, and what You will protect me from.” It’s so important to acknowledge that God’s providence lies also in what He does not provide: an easy fix, a misdirected path, a now-solution that leaves a later-hole.

Rejoice fully in the Lord, because He is present enough to walk with you through your night and day, in bad times and in blessed times. He is always all in for us. No matter what.

Dearest Lord, thank you for being all in for me. I pray in thanksgiving for all you have done, all you will do, and all you have, are, and will protect me from. I am all in for you. Unfortunately, people have even lost their homes and, in some instances, their lives. Yet, in comparison to those seriously afflicted living in war-torn countries suffering from civil conflict or outside attacks, my problems with losing internet and lights are trivial.
Psalm 9:11-12 reminds us to sing the Lord’s praises and proclaim what He has done among the nations. This verse emphasizes the importance of thankfulness and acknowledging God’s sovereignty.

The psalmist also highlights God’s compassion for the afflicted and persecuted. This powerful reminder that God doesn’t ignore the cries of those suffering should prompt us to examine our hearts and consider how we can emulate God’s compassion in our interactions with others.

In a world filled with turmoil and injustice, it’s easy to become desensitized to the suffering of others. But when we’re Christ followers, we’re called to remember the afflicted and extend a helping hand to those in need. We’re called to be Jesus’ hands and feet, showing compassion and love to hurting people.

Take a moment to thank God for His faithfulness and compassion toward the afflicted. Ask for the strength and wisdom to be agents of His love and mercy in a world desperately needing it. May we never ignore the cries of the afflicted, but instead, may we be moved to action, following the example of our compassionate God.

VERSE

Psalm 9:11-2 (ESV: English Standard Version)

Don't have your Bible handy? Click here to read online.

AUTHOR

Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes

Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes is an editor, author, speaker, podcaster, and educational consultant. You get the idea. Thankfulness begets peace.

The Apostle Paul continues to encourage us to develop habits of peace and gratitude by letting God’s word dwell richly in us. Other times, I’ll sing to Him when I’m upset, pouring out my words of regret, sorrow, or repentance to Him. My earthly father called me his “little songbird,” because he said I never stopped singing. If I stopped singing, he knew something was dreadfully wrong. Even now, one of my favorite activities is to sing.

I have been lovingly teased during praise and worship by my husband, my offspring – even my pastor – because of my love of whichever worship song I hear during service. One song will end. Then, as the opening chords of a new worship song begins, I tend to excitedly tap the person beside me and say, “Ooh! I love that song!” Invariably, the person who ends up beside me ends up saying, “Yes, I know. You love all of the songs!”

How can I not love them all – especially when they are lifting up the name of Jesus, my Lord and savior? How can I keep from singing from God’s praises, when He has loved me enough to sacrifice His all… for the likes of me? I was drowning in sin and self-hatred, when He pulled me out and set me on a place of righteousness with Him. The Hebrew word for mercy is "rachamim." It comes from the root word, "racham," which means "to love tenderly," "to pity," "to sympathize with," or "to have compassion for."

In the summer of 2021, an orange kitty zipped to and fro throughout my neighborhood. His golden eyes displayed a weariness that belied its young age. I pitied that scared little soul. He was not a kitten, but not yet a full-grown cat. He needed to know somebody loved him. So, I knocked on doors and asked my neighbors: "Is that orange kitty yours?" Every answer came back negative.

One neighbor said, "If you ever catch him, keep him. He’s feral. Nobody else wants him."

My daughter helped me coax the little boy into my home. He then landed squarely into my arms. At first, I determined to foster this little boy. However, pity turned to love, and the idea of parting with that grateful kitty became unbearable. Every day, when he head-butts me and proceeds to purr while I scratch his outstretched chin, I know I chose well to give Shiloh – my gift from God – compassion and tender loving care.

When God saw me running to and fro in life, with no compass, feral, at my most unlovable, He showed me a love, compassion and mercy that defies all. I did nothing to deserve His goodness, but He extends it to me, anyway. Nobody else wanted me…. But God did. And like my kitty-boy, I will give thanks every day to the One who rescued me from myself.

Ponder the times when God showed His rachamim to you. It will be just one more reason to love Psalms 107:1 – "Oh, give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever."

VERSE

Psalm 107:1 (ESV: English Standard Version)

Don't have your Bible handy? Click here to read online.

AUTHOR

Rebecca Jones

Rebecca Jones is a writer and cake decorating enthusiast who lives in Seaford, Delaware with her husband Tim, and her youngest son -- a musically gifted young man named Samuel. An ongoing family crisis had been turning around and around in my mind all night. As I swung between desperate prayers and the what-ifs of the situation, I felt tight and brittle, like a rotisserie chicken left too long under the heat.

I rose quietly and paused to watch the peaceful rhythm of my husband’s breathing as he slept, grateful for his steady presence in my life. Slipping out of the room, I retreated to my desk and Bible - my anchor of peace when struggles felt too big.

King David knew all about sleepless nights spent fretting about the future. He often experienced circumstances far beyond his control or ability to comprehend. His story features not one but many "giants" faced throughout his life. Take, for instance, his experience with King Saul. For a decade, he was cruelly hunted by Saul, whom he had faithfully served. Even after David received the kingdom God had promised, challenges dogged his steps.

But David persevered in his faith. He continued to pour out his fears, anger, and desperation to God. He meditated on God’s promises, and they strengthened his heart, bubbling out of him in Psalms of joyful thanks to the God who never failed him.

God doesn’t promise an easy life. But He does promise to listen when we cry out to him, to respond to our needs, and to strengthen us in our too-big struggles. We can fill up on God’s promises as David did, and with hearts of grateful praise, say, "I am helped."

VERSE

Psalm 28:7 (ESV: English Standard Version)

Don't have your Bible handy? Click here to read online.

AUTHOR

Bethany Macklin

For two decades, Bethany has explored the power of God's attributes to anchor faith through life's fiercest storms. Statistically, 97% of those who experience an AAA don’t make it to the hospital on time. Of the remaining three percent, half of those patients don’t make it. We arrived at the hospital to say our "goodbyes" to him. My only concern was: where would my father spend eternity?

We never read the Bible together whilst growing up. We never prayed together as a family – unless there was a medical or financial emergency. And most of those times, we were told to pray by ourselves. Maybe that’s why I went to the cafeteria by myself to pray to my heavenly Father, regarding my earthly father. "Please Father," I cried. "I cannot let go of Dad unless I know that he will be with You when he leaves this earth."

"Hello, can I help you, dear?" The chaplain’s soft voice broke my contemplation. I told her about my father’s situation. "Oh, I know him," she answered. "Such a nice man! He was here a few months ago. He prayed the sinner’s prayer." Thankful for the news, I embraced her.

Miraculously, he survived the AAA, and lived another seven years. In that time, we talked about God on a regular basis. He spoke about being content whether he lived twenty more years, or just twenty minutes more. And, one of the best days of my life was the day I prayed for the first time to our heavenly Father with my earthly father.

"For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to about to the glory of God. Praying in thanksgiving during difficult times can be hard, and praying for others who give our life challenges can be even harder. But prayer is a wonderful gift from God to give us a direct line of communication.

As a child, I considered prayer like an open phone line. As I clasped my hands and bowed my head, the call was placed and whether I heard Him or not, He always answered and always listened. Many prayers were rote, but I still believe God never tires of hearing from His children.

He has surrounded us with the beauty of His creation, and when things don’t line up according to how we think it should be—an inattentive family member, a quarrelsome coworker, or a grumpy gus in the check-out line—we sometimes feel validated in our own negative emotion toward that person and can get caught up in praying against someone instead of for them.

The Bible exhorts us to see others and our circumstances as Jesus does. We pray for relief for ourselves, but we are also instructed to pray in thanksgiving for everyone.

Thank you, God, for the challenges I face, because I am alive to face them. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to show grace to others, and to pray for what difficulties they are facing both known and unknown to me. Thank you, Lord, especially for the gift of seeing others as You see them, and not as I want them to be.

We are all your children, Lord, and for that, I present my prayers and praises with thanksgiving. When I watch the news, my despair is compounded, and the combination of self-doubt and fear can be debilitating. It can be easy to get caught up in the challenges and busyness of the world. We may focus on what’s going wrong rather than what’s going right. However, Ephesians 5:19:20 reminds us of the importance of gratitude. It calls us to make music from our hearts to the Lord and to give thanks in all circumstances.

A powerful message is found in Ephesians 5:19-20. That verse encourages us to speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit and to always thank God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Giving thanks in all circumstances doesn’t mean we must be thankful for the difficult situations but rather for the strength, guidance, and growth we can receive from them. It’s an acknowledgment that God is present in every aspect of our lives, both the joyful and the challenging.

When we cultivate a spirit of gratitude, we shift our focus from our problems to the blessings surrounding us. It allows us to see God's hand in our lives despite hardships. By giving thanks in all circumstances, we demonstrate our trust in God's plan and reliance on His grace.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on the many reasons for which we can be thankful. Whether it’s the love of family and friends, the beauty of creation, or the gift of salvation through Christ, there’s always something to be grateful for. Is it traditional, where your father, and generations before you attended? Is it a caring church, a teaching church, or a modern church? When I first visited the church where I am now a member, tears streamed down my face, and I’d say to the pastor, "I feel like this is home." Everything fit into place for me, every time I visited. The sermons challenged me while not condemning me. I felt unconditional love every time I entered the doors.

Two years later, I still have that feeling of "home." It is not unusual to witness people praying for each other in the hallway, in the kitchen, or even the bathroom. If someone needs prayer that moment, prayer they shall receive. Worship is filled with joy and wonder. I am loved unconditionally. Tears don’t stream down my face every week, anymore, but I feel more empowered to do the things of God when I leave the building than when I entered.

When you feel the love of Christ shining through another’s countenance, it helps lift your faith a little. When you pray for each other without fear, it helps each person do a little better for one another. When you know that someone else sheds tears with you when you are going through a hard time, or truly celebrates with you when breakthrough has occurred, it’s something for which we can truly be grateful.

Paul said to the Thessalonians, "We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly and the love of everyone of you all abounds toward each other." May we remember to love each other as Christ loves us the next time we meet with our brethren.

VERSE

2 Thessalonians 1:3 (ESV: English Standard Version)

Don't have your Bible handy? Click here to read online.

AUTHOR

Rebecca Jones

Rebecca Jones is a writer and cake decorating enthusiast who lives in Seaford, Delaware with her husband Tim, and her youngest son -- a musically gifted young man named Samuel. This is where Jonah was in our verse today. Jonah was in the depths of despair, and found himself swallowed by a great fish, a situation that could easily lead to hopelessness. Yet, even in this dark moment, Jonah turns to God with a heart full of gratitude. His response teaches us an essential truth: gratitude can flourish in the most unexpected circumstances. The Message Bible puts it this way: “But I’m worshiping you, God, calling out in thanksgiving! And I’ll do what I promised I’d do! Salvation belongs to God!”

Thanksgiving is often associated with abundance and joy, but it is good to remember that gratitude is not solely a response to positive experiences. Jonah’s declaration of praise in the belly of the fish demonstrates that true thanksgiving arises from recognizing God’s sovereignty, even when life feels overwhelming.

It could have been easy for Jonah to whine and complain, but instead he gave thanks!

Think about your own circumstance. When you are in a place of great need and find yourself swallowed up by your circumstances, is there an attitude of gratitude? When you’re here, think about the ways that God has worked in your life. Perhaps there were moments when you felt lost or alone, yet God's presence was with you, guiding and sustaining you.

It’s in those times we can be like Jonah, and offer thanks not only for our blessings but also for the trials that deepen our faith and reliance on Him.

Prayer:

God, thank You for being a constant presence in my life, even when I face difficulties. Help me to cultivate a heart of gratitude, just as Jonah did, recognizing that salvation and hope come from You alone. As I gather around table this Thanksgiving, let my praise be filled with joy and thanksgiving for both the blessings and the lessons learned through the trials of life. Amen.

Contemplation:

Take a moment to write down three things you are grateful for, particularly those that may have come from difficult situations. How can you express this gratitude to God and others this Thanksgiving?

VERSE

Jonah 2:9 (ESV: English Standard Version)

Don't have your Bible handy? Click here to read online.

AUTHOR

Chris Scotland

Chris Scotland adds to The Morning Show with Denise and Chris, and he is the Assistant Program Director at The Bridge.

Hi! Or, if we travel down south, we might hear, "Oh, bless your heart," if we do or say something which displeases a Southerner.

But to bless the Lord… that’s another matter. Andrae Crouch put Psalm 103:1 perfectly to music as he sang, "Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His Holy name!" In his song, Crouch went on to say, "He has done great things, bless His Holy name." Matt Redman and Steve Angrisano found 10,000 reasons for our hearts to find to bless the Lord.

Nowadays, we tend to be on a journey to find our own self-worth, our own identity, our own edification. As we embark on "Biblical self-discovery" of who we are, or how we think Christ sees us, do we take our eyes off of the one truly deserving of worship, blessing, glory and honor in the process?

It’s only because of His mercy and grace, and the fact that He is slow to anger that He doesn’t deal with me in the manner that I deserve, but rather in the way that He showers me each day with His lovingkindness. The One who casts my sins as far away from the east is from the west is worthy of the highest blessing and worship, forevermore! We moved to the Eastern Shore less than three months prior from New York State, so I had no idea what a hurricane could do in our new home state. Reluctantly, he did so. "It'll be okay; I prayed over the house while boarding it up," he said later. "Will you trust Him?" he asked me. Yes; I prayed and believed we'd be safe.

Isobel arrived that night. The winds blew fiercely. Following our nightly prayer time with the family, my husband and I braced for the storm. One by one, our children sought solace in the safety of our room. Our toddler's cries sent me to her room to scoop her up and then lay her in between her father and me. Next, our four-year-old burst into the room. He leapt upon the bed, and searched for a spot between his sister and me. Finally, the 11-year-old hovered in the doorway to our bedroom. "Do you want to get in with us, honey?" I asked. He shook his head in the affirmative, and jumped in with the rest of the children.

Twenty-one years have passed. Needless to say, we survived that storm. Those three children have all moved out to make lives of their own. Our final child was added to the family two years following Isobel. We have encountered our fair share of storms – physical, and spiritual – but we can take heart in the knowledge that "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.'"

VERSE

Psalm 92:1-2 (ESV: English Standard Version)

Don't have your Bible handy? Click here to read online.

AUTHOR

Rebecca Jones

Rebecca Jones is a writer and cake decorating enthusiast who lives in Seaford, Delaware with her husband Tim, and her youngest son -- a musically gifted young man named Samuel. I loved everything about it. As the organ played a hymn, the congregation stood and sang as members of the choir would follow behind a young man who held a cross aloft. The pastor was always last in this processional line. Multi-colored bits of sunlight danced through the stained-glass windows as it rested upon your hand.

Some things about the service would change from week to week – but never the Blessing. At the end of the service, before the processional back down the aisle, the minister stood, arms outstretched, and said, “The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious upon you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.”

There was always something in those words that filled me with a sense of belonging. God wanted to bless and keep me safe. He wanted to smile upon me and be good to me. He wanted me to experience peace that surpasses all understanding. Yesterday I was running late and had to get home. I did something I NEVER do: I had to ignore the little orange light that popped up on my car’s dashboard. You know, the one that looks like a gas pump... It usually comes on when your car needs gas... My car rolls into the driveway at home, and my mind is already trying to transition from where I was to where I was about to be. You could say I was mentally and literally running on empty. Living that way will get you farther in the immediate, but make things significantly harder when that tank eventually runs dry.

This morning I hopped in the car (already late) and that little orange icon was still there, I’m pretty sure it had a little smirk on it. I honk the horn and blow kisses to my girls, as they love to watch me leave every day. My mind races to where the nearest gas station is.

It’s times like these that the slowest drivers like to be out on the roads. My heart is pounding, and my mind is racing. Will I have to call my wife to bring me a tank of gas? Will I have to make her pack the kids up because of my mistake? I can see the gas station; I half expect the car to shut off at any moment, but it doesn’t. I safely pull into the gas station, shut off the engine, and breathe a sigh of relief. "Thank You, Lord."

I want to encourage you today to look for every moment something goes right. Catch those moments, and don’t let them pass you by. Recognize that every good thing comes from the Lord, and give Him the praise. It wasn’t luck; it was the King of the Universe who was fully present in your life.

VERSE

1 Chronicles 29:13 (ESV: English Standard Version)

Don't have your Bible handy? Click here to read online.

AUTHOR

Mark Dickey

Mark Dickey serves as the Afternoon Show Host, as well as Content Specialist, at The Bridge.

Mark was born and raised in Maryland, spending most of his time in Queen Anne’s County. We sacrifice me-time for an after-work commitment. We sacrifice some savings when the house needs an emergency repair.

So why does the Bible tell us to sacrifice our praise? Hebrews 13:15: "Let us, then, always offer praise to God as our sacrifice through Jesus, which is the offering presented by lips that confess him as Lord." (GNT)

Praise is a good thing. Where is the sacrifice? It’s in the word itself. "sacer" (Latin; also sacrificium), means "holy," facere means "to make." When we sacrifice something, the original intent is to make it holy.

God asks that our praise be true and honest and worthy of Him. When we speak the name of Jesus, we honor God, His Son, and the Holy Spirit by claiming their Heavenly Presence in our lives!

Words are important. God spoke the world into existence. He is The Word! When we choose to acknowledge God and sacrifice our words to Him, we give up the words of this world (slander, negativity/poor self-talk, speaking badly about or in front of others); and when we praise Him out loud we lay God’s foundation for our lives and break the chains of the enemy. How powerful are these words!

Father God, I thank you with all I am, for the ability to thank you with all I am! You are the True Source and Sacrifice, and I welcome Your Presence in my life. Guide my words, Lord, to speak Your Truth into the lives of those around me, every moment of every day. May my world-talk turn to God-talk, and may I sacrifice to You always. I also led worship for our women’s retreats. Now that I’m in a different season and no longer involved in those activities, I stopped playing the piano and got rusty. I missed playing. Lately, I’ve been practicing for joy, not out of duty. There are no children to tutor and no services to prepare for. However, I’ve been enjoying improving my skills to worship God and please him with the sound of rejoicing. I hope to continue to improve, but I’m enjoying the journey. For me, personal worship is a form of pouring out my gratitude.

Gratefulness is a powerful force that can transform our perspective. When we reflect on our blessings, we cultivate a spirit of thankfulness. We’re reminded of God’s goodness and faithfulness in our lives. During challenges and difficulties, choosing to be grateful shifts our focus from what we lack to what we’ve been given.

In Jeremiah 30:19, we’re reminded of the promise of thanksgiving and rejoicing from the Lord. The verse says, “From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of rejoicing. I will add to their numbers, and they will not be decreased; I will bring them honor, and they will not be disdained.”

Rejoicing is also a significant aspect of our faith. It’s more than expressing happiness—it’s a deep-rooted joy that comes from knowing and trusting God’s promises. Rejoicing allows us to celebrate God’s goodness, even during trials. We acknowledge God’s sovereignty and power over every situation when we rejoice.

As we meditate on Jeremiah 30:19, remember that God desires us to live with hearts full of gratitude and express our joy through rejoicing. We can allow thanksgiving to flow from our lips and joy to resonate in our hearts, knowing that God is faithful in fulfilling His promises. Today, we can choose to be grateful and rejoice in the Lord, for He is worthy of all our praise.

VERSE

Jeremiah 30:19 (ESV: English Standard Version)

Don't have your Bible handy? Click here to read online.

AUTHOR

Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes

Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes is an editor, author, speaker, podcaster, and educational consultant. In the early days of the station fundraisers on Appels Road, volunteers would take pledges in the smallest conference room. You’d better love your brethren in Christ to volunteer, then. Pledges were written down; it was a miracle you could hear yourself think!

Nowadays, along Route One, volunteers enjoy a personal desk with computers to enter important data. In the corners sit various employees, who are always kind in assisting volunteers who need extra help. There’s always something to do, like stuffing envelopes, filling treat bags and more.

While the place and size of the venue has changed from the early days, one thing has always remained the same: we are part of something bigger than ourselves. With every call that comes in, we the volunteers have the honor to hear stories about how the radio station has blessed the caller. We the volunteers have the privilege to take heart-felt prayer requests to the Throne Room of God.

We have laughed and celebrated victories regarding saved loved ones, new jobs, every victory imaginable. We have mourned with those who have mourned. It’s not unusual for volunteers to cry together and pray over a situation. In all circumstances, God always receives the praise during Fundraiser; and that’s what makes those six days of the year all the more special.

"And in that day you will say: "Praise the Lord, call upon His name; declare His deeds among the peoples, make mention that His name is exalted." From humble beginnings at a former chicken house in the farmlands of Milford, to serving listeners in four states, The Bridge is still strengthening and connecting fellow believers.

VERSE

Isaiah 12:4 (ESV: English Standard Version)

Don't have your Bible handy? Click here to read online.

AUTHOR

Rebecca Jones

Rebecca Jones is a writer and cake decorating enthusiast who lives in Seaford, Delaware with her husband Tim, and her youngest son -- a musically gifted young man named Samuel. A different theme is chosen each week; attendees can choose to bring an entrée or dessert or something to drink. Once a month, I tend to bake a cake to celebrate the birthdays of parishioners for that particular month. If I know a particular someone celebrating a birthday that month, I might ask their favorite flavor cake or what design they’d like to see. It warms my heart to hear my fellow attendees’ reactions to a cake covered in buttercream flowers, a buttercream transfer, or cake painting.

But then, following the "oohs" and "ahhs," I wait. More than the design of the cake, I want to know: do you like the taste? That audible, "Mmmm, I love it!" means much more to me than the most beautiful design I could imagine. Yes, I want my creations to look practically perfect; however, I want them to taste better than they look. To hear the satisfaction in someone’s response let’s me know that I’ve done my job to the fullness of its completion.

Every day, God creates. He feeds us, both body and soul. He speaks to us through His Word and in His creation. Each and every day is a masterpiece. We can look good on the outside, but that’s not what matters as much to Him. He longs to give us great and perfect gifts; are we hungry enough to let Him satisfy us? Are you ready to come to the table and be filled?

"Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!
