Cloud Gazing
Clouds are fascinating to watch. Sometimes they even begin to take on the shapes of animals, angels, faces... Some are so beautiful!...big, white fluffy clouds that slowly pass us by. While others are dark, almost ominous, full of rain and energy that often show itself through lightning and massive storms. Even watching storm clouds can be fascinating.
We aren't the only cloud watchers. In the Old Testament, the Israelites could follow God's leading by looking to the cloud by day. The prophet Elijah watched the sky for a cloud to signify that rain was finally going to come in order to alert the king. There was a cloud in the sky the day John the Baptist baptized Jesus and the spirit of God descended from it as a dove.
Hebrews talks about a great cloud of witnesses. And when Jesus ascended into heaven after his resurrection and spending time with the disciples, Acts 1 gives us the play by play. Jesus was "taken up and disappeared in a cloud". Verses 10 & 11 tell us "As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. 'Men of Galilee,' they said, 'why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!'
They were literally saying...why are you standing here staring at the clouds? Someday Jesus is going to return from heaven in the same way you saw him go! From the clouds! I love the promise that He is going to come back and we can know that He will be coming... from the clouds. It's a great reason to keep looking UP! The last thing Jesus said to His disciples was to wait for the Holy Spirit to come and then to go tell everyone to the ends of the earth about Him.
We should keep an eye to the sky and we must keep telling others about Jesus!
