Clear Plastic Covers

I was watching a movie the other night that started out with a friend sitting down on her friend’s sofa that was covered in clear plastic. As she lifted a fork full of cherry pie to her mouth she asked her friend, ‘when are you going to take this plastic off and live a little?’ You know what happened next, don’t you?! You guessed it! The cherry pie dropped right off the fork, onto the plastic and the response was…’that would be why I haven’t taken off the plastic.”

My grandmother had certain pieces of furniture she kept covered in this clear, thick plastic and mostly as kids we avoided sitting on them because, while they were protected from stains, they were not at all comfortable to sit on! Watching that scene from the movie made me think about how we tend to live life. Is it possible we have covered ourselves with a nearly invisible wall that attempts to shield us from really living like we were meant to live? We want to avoid the stains of life, but that’s what brings color into the fabric of our story…and builds character in our soul. It’s how we learn and grow.

Jesus said in John 10:10 (ESV), ‘The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.’ Two very important things to know, really know, about these words of our Lord. There is a very real enemy who wants to harm us. And, Jesus left heaven to make it clear to us, beyond all doubt, that HE came to be sure we would LIVE, really LIVE!

Maybe it’s time to take the plastic off the furniture. Stop trying to make everything look perfect and living afraid that we’ll mess up the fabric of our life! Let Jesus come and sit awhile in His presence as He brings abundant, extraordinary life to us. Life is so much better without the plastic!
